When I was studying for my step 1s, I was honestly confused about either studying the BRS pathology or sticking with Goljan. Just after taking the test, I would have to say that you should really most likely stick with this book instead. It is concise and it covers most of the things you require to know for the boards. You can fill in the rest with USMLE qBank (which is a have to).
Do not let other people fool you into thinking that studying Goljan will essentially raise your score. It will not. The book is fine and it is extensive. But lets be sincere with ourselves. Even if you read Goljan 10 times more than, how considerably are you in fact going to retain? The book is detailed and it is wonderful for reference. But for the purposes of the boards, BRS is adequate.
Update: I got my score back and ended up obtaining 245/99. I read this book more than twice and I honestly retained only 90% of the complete book. Then again, regardless of that BRS + Qbank = win. I know there are individuals on SDN saying that RR is the most godly book and that if you do not memorize it then you will never break 230. That is simply not correct. To be sincere, it does not actually matter what resource you use. Just get one and stick to it. In my opinion the BRS is shorter and higher yield than other books and I will vouch for it.

I studied for the boards from this book and was precisely what I required, do not waste your time with Goljan's Rapid Overview simply because is honestly tough to read or know, get my advise and pass step 1 with this concise and very nicely written book, you will get what you will need with no will need to get those messy Goljans notes. The book is quick to read and digest. I recommended 100%

Client Evaluations

There is no doubt majority of medical students all through the globe use this book. And I do consider it is incredibly informative. But you have to be prepared to devote a lot of time reading it, primarily if this is the only book you strategy on using in pathology. Because it takes a lot of time to comb through the substantial quantity of information in this book to choose out what is critical for medical students to bear in mind. So I would advocate most medical students to also order Rapid Overview Pathology: With STUDENT CONSULT On-line Access for the reason that it is much additional clinically oriented and also offers you the pathophysiology behind the symptoms which Robbins does not. I also really feel that though Robbins does a really good job mentioning the signs and symptoms in a concise manner, it could do a lot improved integrating the symptoms with the pathology. So I would use this book as a reference book in the truest sense. Meaning I would get a brief concept of the subject from Rapid Overview or some other supply and then read Robbins if you have time. But for specific items you will almost certainly have to go directly to Robbins. For example, Robbins does a outstanding job with the morphology, which is some what lacking in most review books like Rapid Overview and BRS. I would decide to buy the book only if you have a beneficial quantity of time to understand the subject or just actually like pathology. But i would NOT shop for it if you are
1. seeking for a rapid critique, ie just before step 1 (because honestly most of info in this book wont support there)
two. if you dont have a lot of time to focus solely on pathology and this book. Due to the fact as I said it will take time for you to read by means of all the info and pick out essential points that you desire to understand. And on top rated of that to be able to do this, you will first have to get use to the writing style of this book which is rather several. (regularly study based)
As for difference in between 7th and 8th editions. I personally dont consider there is that significantly of a difference. The authors mention extensively redoing the first chapter and third. But other than that I feel its mostly reorganizing and generating it look even more pleasing. ie cut from here and paste there. So I dont assume its worth getting 8th if you have the 7th. And if you are honestly tight on money I would invest in the 7th. I genuinely don't consider they have altered the information at all specially in systemic pathology.

This book has every thing it takes to be thought of a genuinely fantastic book. Even though the text is quite dense, you can conveniently understand it. The subjects are thoroughly explained, and there is normally a great scheme to assist fully grasp them. Overall a particularly decent pathology book, which I am happy to have.

Customer Evaluations

I was recently diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 29 and soon after reading this book, realize that I have probably have had this since I started puberty! I was diagnosed two months ahead of this book came out and lastly received my copy the other day...I in no way anticipated a book so much. Lastly, I have a guide book for this syndrome! Dr. Futterweit is one particular of the nation's foremost authorities on this situation and has spent his life researching and treating this condition. This book is the ultimate guide to understanding PCOS, getting a appropriate diagnosis (as symptoms are variable among all females and are in some cases diagnosed incorrectly), eating and physical exercise habits to aid reverse the condition, as nicely as techniques for alleviating countless other horrible symptoms like excess facial hair, acne, thinning scalp hair, etc. As I devoured this book I found myself saying over and more than, "wow, this is my life". The book is written in such a outstanding tone. Though some of the 'understanding PCOS' components are pretty medical, it's not so filled with medical jargon that you will not understand it. It is evident that Dr. Futterweit actually cares about girls with this situation and desires to educate us and give us hope! If you are like me, I am only discovering the complete fledged condition as a result of going off the pill in hopes of obtaining pregnant. There are components of this book dedicated to Obtaining Pregnant, Staying Pregnant (PCOS sufferers have increased probabilities of miscarriage), gestational diabetes, etc.
I really feel this book has given me a wealth of facts, some of which I intend to share with my principal care physician and ob gyn. I also located that a superb compliment to this book in terms of dietary guidelines is Dr. Jennie Brand-Miller's The New Glucose Revolution Guide to Living Nicely with PCOS. I had no thought that due to this situation I have a form of insulin resistance and I've battled weight all my life. It turns out the usual low fat diets that tend to be larger carbohydrate are one particular of the worst approaches that PCOS sufferers can manage their diet program. I've currently located significantly success with a low glycemic index diet in just 6 weeks and am startled at how considerably my general excellent of life has enhanced with Dr. Futterweit's tactics which are well defined in this book. If you are lately diagnosed or have had this situation for years without substantially good results at battling the symptoms, this book is for you. I can confidently say that I'm on the road to battling this syndrome with education and a newfound way of life.

As a PCOS patient, this is just the type of book I have been hoping would be published. Dr. Futterweit is one of the best PCOS physicians in the country, possibly the world, and his book is nicely written and thorough. He manages to explore the complexity of PCOS whilst writing clearly and simply adequate to preserve the subject matter fascinating and intelligible. He covers a lot of ground and provides decent, practical suggestions and ideas for patients.
It is especially clear from the way this book is written that Dr. Futterweit deeply cares about his patients. I had the pleasure to hear him speak at a PCOS conference a variety of years ago, and I am grateful for his dedication to this lesser identified but extremely considerable well being issue.
I very suggest the book, it really is a awesome supply of info and it will assist you fully grasp and treat PCOS.
Congratulations Dr. Futterweit, and thank you.

Consumer Evaluations

I have gone via pretty a lot all of the step three critique books in the marketplace such as FA, Crush step 3, the nail the board, Board and ward, and Powerful Medicine. I also have read the Kaplan Q book step three
This volume surpass all of the above in terms of the good quality of content material, amount of fine detail, board relevancy, and the author's special insights into the material as a really good teacher himself.
He tend to shed a lot of beneficial insight into the board questions. I had met him when in individual when I was a medical student at the FHMC in Queens, NY.
But this book is not perfect (There is no such issue as a perfect board evaluation book, we all know it). I wish there are additional full index, which is quite bad and as well brief. It takes some time to obtain a subject with "rushed out" sort of index.
Also, there are a handful of errors. It says that Mitral valve prolapse with even regurgitaion does not desire endocarditis Prophylaxis but I have been able to verify with a handful of medical references such as Harrison-the current update- and Washington manual that MR with regurgitation desires prophylaxis.
the author boldly claims that there is no prophylatic therapy for cluster headache with some rather unconvincing logic, but I have read from a lot of respectful sources that beta blockade or Calcium channel blockade should be offered for prophylatic RX for cluster HA.
I also discovered this misleading facts about ASCUS in Pap smear results. It says that if pap outcomes in ASUC, the patient desire HPV testing, But it does not mention the essential reality that if the patient is a high threat group, ASUCS have to mandate immediate Colposcopy biopsy.
Other shortcoming is the Leukemia section, which he pretty much neglect to cover the crucial facts about ALL and AML but throw in really vague mixed specifics below title "Acute leukemia".
Other than the index, it is a decent volume and fairly affordable priced.
I would not recommend it as a sole overview supply although. Step three appear to ask the understanding of the concepts and application of the further managements contrast to the step 2 which is much more of recognition of the key words and traditional signs. Thus I reject this book's so named Guarantee passing score Claim....I very advise a second critique book beside this for a superior efficiency on step 3.It is certainly unreasonable to claim that this book has "everthing" to do pass step three.
I never ever advise Strong Medicine, which is consistent of skeletal bullet list of the info without having no actual bread and butter for each and every illness presentation. This book fails to demonstrate the competency and self-confidence of the material presented with a fair quantity of wrong info as properly.
FA is also not suggested since its missing out also lots of topics and is also incredibly boring to read with tiny insights. I only use the 100 CCS situations on the back of this book.
Board and Ward is not recommended as nicely considering the fact that its too standard to tackle the step three queries, which tend to ask considerably more in dept understanding and managements than mere factual important words, which is what is all about Board and Ward. It was valuable for step two though and NBME Shelf exams.
PS: I passed the step three with 217/91%,(October 2010) which I have to give a lot of credit toward this fantastic book. Peace right after the agony of waiting for the score, which sent to me through a lengthy e-mail 12 PM, midnight third wednesday. However the matching procedure is but to be known. Profession in medicine consumes my soul and the person itself. Prayers for all.

I just purchased this book recently and have been studying with it for the Step 3 exam. If you are seeking for some thing that basically sums up the Kaplan material into one particular book, you might possibly like this. I doubt it would be the only thing you will need to score well but it certainly helps out. Certain chapters dont have as substantially material as you'd hope but the Ob/Gyn chapters in my opinion are pretty good. Then again, it is not got for the C.C.S portion of the exam. I havn't found a book that can be applied for that portion of the exam as of yet.
Combine this book with Initial Help for the Step 3 and a handful of months of UsmleWorld, it should really support out.
